Portimão is a city with a thriving port, known for its historic centre, lively marina and close proximity to excellent beaches and golf courses such as Alto Golf & Country Club, Morgado, and the famous Penina Championship courses. To the south, there is the well known Praia da Rocha, with cliffs as a backdrop where you can enjoy endless sunny days with a great number of water sports including sailing, windsurfing, water skiing, scuba diving, and deep sea fishing. These compliment the boat tours that explore the natural caves and tunnels or navigate the river Arade and the town of Silves.
After a sunny day, the city of Portimão offers a lot of fun and attractions. The restaurants on the pier are perfect for sampling the local cuisine of sardines served on homemade bread, followed by a shellfish feijoada, seafood rice or fried cuttlefish. There are many opportunities for shopping in Portimão, either in the narrow streets of the historic centre, filled with local crafts, in the modern shopping centre or in the Aqua Portimão Shopping Centre.
Portimão has strong connections to the river and the sea, so there are many traces of history that are worth visiting such as the Portimão Museum which is housed in a restored 19th century cannery; the church of Our Lady of the Conception, of gothic style; the Mother Church of Portimão dating back to the 19th century. XV; the Church and the College of the Jesuits where we can see the works of about 200 Portuguese painters who constitute the estate of the Diogo Gonçalves Museum; the Fortress of Santa Catarina, which today is one of the viewpoints of the city and the Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar, which started to be discovered at the end of the century XIX and prevail until today.
At the end of the day, enjoy the Portimão riverside area, one of the places to go for a stroll and go to Portimão Municipal Theatre, which is the result of the transformation of the 17th Century Strait of Garfías Palace. Concerts, plays, and workshops have helped to contribute to the revitalization of the historical zone and to the cultural diversity of the city. In Portimão there is always something to do. If the sun and beaches are not enough, a lot of fun awaits you just around the corner.
