Monchique is located about 15 kilometers inland from the Algarve coast. It is one of the highest villages in the mountains of the Algarve and known for its natural resources and wellness, among other things. The Serra of Monchique (mountain of Monchique) is located in a protected natural reserve and is gifted with rich flora and fauna. Therefore, it is also called the garden of the Algarve and has excellent walking trails. It's worth visiting Monchique and Caldas de Monchique, just for the ride up through the beautiful mountains.
Caldas de Monchique is where the Romans discovered the healing spring water from the mountains and is said to have healing properties and be very beneficial for the body. The central town square has a great atmosphere and is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a beverage.
The highest point of the mountain is Fóia and is a stone's throw from Monchique. From there you can enjoy the magnificent views over the entire south coast of the Algarve right down to the ocean.
